Movies that feel likeKopps (2003)

A small Swedish village, Högboträsk, is so peaceful that crime is nonexistent. The police spend their shifts drinking coffee, eating hot dogs and chasing down runaway cows. This is all well and good for the village's own police, but the police management board wants to discontinue the local police force for lack of crime.

If you loved Kopps, the closest films we have are The Legend of Drunken Master (1994), Son of Rambow (2007) and Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997). All three share Kopps' witty and playful feel, which is what we rank on before quality.

Seen the big three already? The under-the-radar pick below is The Prodigal Son (1981).

One thread runs through both: friendship

Both are built on the same subject: hostage situation

The difference: Leans harder into crime than Kopps does

Two young men, Martin and Rudi, both suffering from terminal cancer, get to know each other in a hospital room. They drown their desperation in tequila and decide to take one last trip to the sea. Drunk and still in pajamas they steal the first fancy car they find, a 60's Mercedes convertible. The car happens to belong to a bunch of gangsters, which immediately start to chase it, since it contains more than the pistol Martin finds in the glove box.

Both sit in the same witty register

Friends Aldo, Giovanni, and Giacomo cross Italy from north to south for Giacomo's wedding: the father of the bride, a despotic magnate who is both their boss and father-in-law—since Aldo and Giovanni have also married into the family not for love but for money, a fate now awaiting Giacomo—has entrusted them with a priceless piece of modern art, one that looks just like a rather unremarkable wooden leg.
